New Weight Loss Drug Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg)

Hi. I’m Dr. Craig Primack from Scottsdale Weight Loss.

I’m very excited today to introduce a new drug called wegovy.

Wegovy is coming out I hope this week and will be available to anyone who qualifies. Currently the FDA has qualification measures where you should have a BMI of at least 30 or 27 with other risk factors.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is semaglutide but up to 2.4 milligrams. Many of you have seen the commercials for a related drug called Ozempic. Well, this is a higher dose now indicated specifically for weight loss.

The drug is a form of a hormone called GLP-1. You and I all have GLP-1. GLP-1 comes from the small intestines. We eat some food, we swallow it, it goes through our stomach and then to our small intestine. From our small intestine, then a signal is sent through the blood to the brain, a hormone that says basically, “I have food. I’m full. Don’t feed me.” And you and I in our natural form, it only lasts about two minutes. As the food is still there, then it lasts a little bit longer, but then the food goes away and again, the signal goes away. This form, wegovy, the half-life is at least a week and so we only have to dose this drug once a week.

The Weight Loss Results

In the study, the weight loss was amazing. Across the board on average, people lost 15% of their initial weight and a third of all people, 33% lost 20% or more of their weight. Wow. It’s very well tolerated. Some people will at times notice some nausea, food kind of sits in your stomach a little longer and then also some constipation and or diarrhea. Although in my practice, we’ve seen much more constipation than diarrhea.

The medicine is given in an injectable pen form, what’s called a subcutaneous injection. Usually given just very shallow in the skin of your abdomen. I have a pen here. This is a related medicine, but what you can see and I’ll pull off the cap is that the needle on this pen is very, very small and that’s it compared to my finger. You can see how small that is. The needle or the injection is much less than the pinch I gave myself.

Wegovy (Semaglutide) Summary

As a quick summary, wegovy is coming out this week.

Is available from physicians and medical practices like myself, which specialize in putting together a comprehensive program with diet, with exercise, with medicines like wegovy and with behavior changes so that you can do this on your own over long periods of time.

If you do have any questions, please send an email, reach out to me in the office. Otherwise have a great and wonderful week and I’ll see you again next week.
