Doctor Primack's 2 Important Weight Loss Tips - Medical Minute #24

Two Important Weight Loss Tips

Hi, it’s Dr. Craig Primack from Scottsdale Weight Loss, bringing you medical minute number 24. Today I wanted to do something just a little different. I wanted to do a random piece of information. I’m calling my two important weight loss tips. They’re not the most important, but I think following both of these, you will get a long way towards the second level. Not just the weight loss, but the keeping it off.

No News

The first is no news. And I don’t mean no news as in you shouldn’t get information of the world around us. I mean, you shouldn’t watch TV news. TV or internet direct video news comes at you at a million miles an hour, and it’s always stressful. There’s a condition that we learned about in psychology called learned helplessness. During learned helplessness, things are happening that you have no control over, like the news. Things are even happening in our own town and the world around us, and all that happens is our stress level, our cortisol levels come up and it becomes sometimes even paralyzing. And when that happens, unfortunately in the world of weight and weight problems, we do turn to food along with stress eating, that’s number one.

Have a Hobby

Number two is to have some type of creative hobby. A creative hobby can be anything at all that’s creative and you look forward to. You can do it for as little time, maybe a half an hour to an hour a week, or you could do it for 10 or 15 or 20 minutes every day. The most common ones are something like learning to play a musical instrument, like the guitar or a piano. It’s painting, it’s crafting, it’s watercolors, it’s knitting, scrapbooking, anything like that. Even during the pandemic my kids and I did several Bob Ross videos. So Bob Ross, that painter who was on PBS for years, they’re now all on YouTube. And we’d sit in front of the TV with canvases and oil paints. And it just was something to do in an afternoon that wasn’t staring at the TV or such.

So talking about staring at the TV, coming home after a long day of work and just vegging in front of the TV, I think is not the best way to spend our time. At the end of the day, you aren’t any better for that. Now, if you’re doing it to be social, you’re with your significant other, with your kids, and it is a shared activity, it can be done, but don’t make that your primary and only activity. So thanks for being with me today.

If you do have a moment, please subscribe to my channels above if you haven’t already and have a great rest of your week. Thanks.
